For my first  film opening analysis, I looked at black swan (2010), which is a psychological thriller. The opening scene starts with a ballet performance on a dark stage. Straight away, the lighting stands out because most of the stage is completely dark, and only the main character is visible under a spotlight. This makes her look isolated and alone, which already creates a slightly uncomfortable feeling for the audience.

The use of lighting is very important in this scene. The strong contrast between light and dark makes it feel like everything outside the spotlight is unknown or hidden. This links to the psychological side of the film, as it suggests that there is more going on than what we can see. It also makes the audience focus only on the character, which helps build tension slowly.

The camera movement is quite smooth and controlled, especially during the dance. There are tracking shots that follow her movements across the stage, which makes the scene feel more real and engaging. It feels like the audience is part of the performance, rather than just watching from far away. At the same time, there are close-up shots of her face, which show her expressions clearly. These shots are important because they show that even though she is performing calmly, there is something slightly off about her.

As the scene continues, the atmosphere slowly changes. At first, the dance seems normal, but it gradually becomes more intense and uncomfortable. The way she moves and reacts starts to feel less controlled, which hints that something is wrong. This is typical in psychological thrillers, where tension builds slowly instead of happening suddenly.

The sound in the scene is really important as it also helps create this feeling. The music is classical, which fits the ballet setting, but it still feels dramatic and slightly unsettling. There is not much background noise, which makes the scene feel quieter and more focused. This makes every movement and sound more noticeable, adding to the tension.

The costume also has meaning. The character is wearing white, which usually represents innocence and purity. However, as the scene goes on, there is a sense that this innocence might not last. This creates a contrast between how she looks and what might actually be happening inside her mind.

Another important thing is that the opening does not explain everything clearly. Instead of using dialogue, it shows the character through her actions and expressions. This makes the audience think more and try to understand what is happening. It also makes the opening more interesting, as it doesn’t give away too much too early.

The setting being just a stage also adds to the effect. It feels simple, but at the same time, it creates a sense of pressure on the character, as all the focus is on her. It almost feels like she is being watched or judged, which adds to the psychological tension.

Overall, this opening is effective because it builds tension in a slow and subtle way. It focuses more on the character’s mental state rather than action, which fits the psychological thriller genre. The lighting, camera movement, sound, and performance all work together to create a scene that feels both calm and disturbing at the same time. It makes the audience curious and slightly uncomfortable, which makes them want to keep watching and understand what will happen next

For my second film opening analysis, I looked at Nightclawers (2014). The opening starts at night in a quiet, empty area, which already creates a dark and tense mood. We see the main character cutting through a fence and stealing something, which immediately shows that he is not a normal person and is involved in illegal activity.

The lighting in this scene is very dark with yellow and green tones, which makes everything feel a bit dirty and uncomfortable. It doesn’t feel like a safe place, and this matches the character as well. The setting looks quite empty, which makes him seem alone and separate from everyone else.

When the security guard arrives, the tension increases. The bright light from the car suddenly shines on him, which makes the moment feel intense. The sound of the metal being cut and the quiet background noise of the city make the scene feel more real.

What I found interesting was how the character reacts. Instead of panicking, he stays calm and starts talking in a strange way. Even though he is clearly caught, he pretends like nothing is wrong. He lies easily and even starts asking the guard questions, which makes him seem very manipulative. His facial expressions, especially his eyes, make him look a bit unsettling.

The camera focuses a lot on his face using close-up shots, which helps show his expressions clearly. There are also medium shots that show his body language, like how he stands and moves. This helps the audience understand his character without needing too much explanation.

Another detail is how he notices small things around him, like the guard’s uniform and watch. This shows that he is always observing and thinking, which makes him seem more dangerous. Even when the guard is aggressive, he stays polite, which makes the situation feel even more uncomfortable.

At the end of the scene, when the guard is distracted, the character suddenly attacks him. This moment is quick and not fully shown, which makes it more shocking. It leaves the audience thinking about what will happen next.

Overall, this opening is effective because it introduces the character in a very clear way without explaining everything directly. It shows that he is calm, manipulative, and willing to do anything to get what he wants. The lighting, camera work, and sound all work together to create a tense and uncomfortable atmosphere, which fits the thriller genre
